Soft skills you need for a successful IT career

Do you know the secret for career success? It’s not just the mastery of a specific subject, skills of a particular area or anythings else that might show up on a typical job description. It is the right combination of hard skills and soft skills. This applies to professionals from every field.    

Hard skills are generally objective, teachable, measurable skills that involve some kind of technical ability. In IT field, this can be application development, data mining, network administration, QA, etc.

Soft skills tend to be more subjective and intangible. These are an individual’s personal qualities. These include leadership, teamwork, communication skills, interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, etc.

Having a solid grip of the hard skills should never be failed to notice. But an employee having soft skills and hard skills is far more likely to reach the upper positions of the industry and can positively influence the way of interaction than one with just having hard skills. According to a survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), when participating employers were asked to name the attributes/skills they seek in candidates, they replied as follows:

Companies want employees who can direct other workers or employees. They want employees who can maintain the relationships across the organization chain. A great IT professional has to make sure that everyone is on the same page.

Successful communication involves five components like verbal, non verbal, aural, written, visual communication. In an IT company, many projects affect multiple employees. At that time, communication skills can help an employee to survive and he can easily recommended by higher authorities for other projects.

Problem solving skills

Many people avoid problems, because they don’t understand that companies hire them to solve problems. The ability to use your knowledge to find solutions of the problems can show that you can handle your job very well.

Interpersonal skills

Interpersonal skills are the skills used by a person to interact with others properly. For various reasons, interpersonal skills are crucial. More often than not, people lose their jobs because they are unable to work well with others.

But if suppose if you don’t have these skills? It’s never too late to develop them. You can learn a lot by observing other people working around you who excel in these skills. Soft skills will make you a more valuable employee and increase your chances of career success.
